The current Hattiesburg shelter is located in a deteriorating neighborhood, and has endured drive-by shootings, trespassing by alleged abusers, is overcrowded, and due to its age, in need of more and more costly repairs and maintenance. Because of its size and configuration, adolescent/teenage boys, all of whom are sons of abused women, cannot be sheltered with their respective families. Adult men who have also been subjected to domestic abuse cannot be accommodated.
In calendar year 2009, 70 women and 76 children were housed in the Hattiesburg shelter. DAFS had to turn away 9 women and 23 children due to overcrowding in both the Hattiesburg and Laurel Shelters. In 2008, 14 women and 26 children were placed elsewhere due to overcrowding. During 2007, 71 women and 72 children were sheltered in the Hattiesburg shelter, and a total of 9 women and 27 children were placed elsewhere because of lack of space. In both those years, some families could not be accommodated because they included young boys over the age of 15.
To fulfill our promise to the community, we must provide a peaceful, safe, shelter for women, children (including teens), and men who must escape domestic violence. Additionally, it is imperative upon us to assist and support them in their efforts to transition to independent lives. In order for us to effectively accomplish this task, we must either acquire an adequate amount of land on which to build a structure, or acquire a large enough dwelling which can be adapted to our growing needs. Additionally we must locate this new shelter in a place of secrecy in order to provide the utmost security to those whose safety is in peril.
We, the Board of Directors, believe that our fund-raising efforts this year, supported by the generosity of our neighbors and friends in Southeast Mississippi, will succeed and that we will be able to fulfill our promise and mission within the 5 years we established as our goal... securing a new Domestic Abuse Family Shelter in Hattiesburg.
